“Oh my gosh, look at her butt…”

“Oh my gosh, look at her butt…”

I am sure I do not need to tell you that these lyrics belong to “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj. Why am I bringing this up? For centuries women have fought for independence. The right to vote, the right to have a say. In a world where many have fought and continue to fight for respect towards women, the question that boggles my mind is why women are so over sexualised in the music industry. Take a look at Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” which made headlines for its controversial lyrics and video.

What boggles my mind MORE is that women within the music industry over sexualise themselves. Exhibit A - Nicki Minaj. Her “Anaconda” video is nothing but her exposing an almost bare body whilst dancing in an explicit manner. And she is not the only one.

Music is a pure art form which should sell itself – not one which should be sold through sexualisation. Do you agree?
